Preserving Ink Integrity

A pristine signature can degrade to a faint shadow in less than five years if improperly stored. How to protect your investment.

The Enemies of Ink

1. UV Light: The primary destroyer of signatures. Ultraviolet radiation breaks down the chemical bonds in ink pigments, causing them to fade or shift color (e.g., black Sharpie turning yellow/brown). Standard glass blocks almost no UV light.

2. Acid: Standard cardboard, cheap matting, and many plastics contain acids that will slowly eat away at paper and ink over time, causing yellowing ("toning") and brittleness.

3. Humidity: High humidity causes paper fibers to swell and can literally cause vintage ink to re-activate and bleed.

Proper Storage Solutions

  • Museum Glass / Conservation Acrylic Always frame with materials rated for 99% UV protection. It costs more upfront but saves thousands in lost value.
  • Acid-Free Matting (100% Cotton Rag) Ensure no acidic materials ever physically touch the signed item.

Tool: Environmental Fade Risk

Select your display conditions to estimate the risk of noticeable fading within 5 years.

Sharpies in direct sunlight under standard glass can fade completely within 12-18 months.
